Simply cover the open end with paper and secure it with an elastic band. This will keep your queen safe and secure while you inspect your hive.
Tip: don't put her in your pocket, place the roller with the queen in it on top of the brood frames during the inspection, that way you will not be able to close the hive up without first releasing the queen.
